Gap insurance: do I need it?

Compare what you still owe against the insurance check after a total loss. Returns the exact gap, whether Progressive’s 25%-of-ACV Loan/Lease Payoff cap covers it, and a plain verdict.

THE SHORT ANSWER

If you borrowed heavily, drove the car off the lot recently, or leased it, your loan can outrun the insurance check. Gap pays most of the shortfall after a total loss. Enter three numbers to see the actual gap and whether the common 25%-of-ACV cap on Progressive’s Loan/Lease Payoff would cover you.

This is an estimate, not a quote. The calculator does arithmetic on the numbers you enter; actual rates depend on carrier underwriting.

What gap usually doesn’t cover

Gap endorsements and GAP waivers are narrower than most shoppers expect. Progressive’s own gap-insurance page lists the following items that gap coverage “may not cover”:

  • Additional charges related to your loan, like finance or excess-mileage charges
  • Other property or injuries resulting from an accident
  • Engine failure or other repairs

Separately, Progressive describes the math as “your gap coverage covers the gap, minus your deductible,” so you still pay your comprehensive or collision deductible out of pocket on a total-loss claim. Carrier-specific gap products and dealer GAP waivers vary; always read your own policy or waiver language before counting on any specific exclusion.

How we calculate this

Three pieces of arithmetic, no modeled values. Every number in the result is computed from what you entered.

insurance_payout       = max(0, ACV − deductible)
owed_without_gap       = max(0, loan − insurance_payout)
gap_amount             = max(0, loan − ACV)
gap_pct_of_acv         = gap_amount ÷ ACV × 100
progressive_llp_cap    = ACV × 25%
loan_lease_payoff_pays = min(gap_amount, progressive_llp_cap)
residual_deductible = deductible (always, unless the policy covers it)

Two numbers are easy to confuse here, so we split them out. The gap amount (loan − ACV) is what a gap product targets — the pre-deductible shortfall between the loan and the car’s value. The “without gap you’d owe” number (loan − insurance payout) is bigger by exactly the deductible, because without gap your insurance check comes in deductible-light. The gap product closes the pre-deductible shortfall; the deductible itself is your share of the physical-damage settlement and stays yours unless the policy specifically covers it.

The 25%-of-ACV cap is specific to Progressive’s Loan/Lease Payoff. Progressive’s own answer page notes the exact limit varies by state; the 25% figure is their published default. Traditional insurer gap and dealer GAP waivers typically pay the full gap_amount, within their own product rules.

The verdict chip picks from three cases:

NO GAP TO FILL
The insurance check equals or exceeds the loan balance. You don’t need gap or Loan/Lease Payoff for this vehicle.
GAP OR LLP CAN COVER THE DIFFERENCE
There is a gap but it is within Progressive’s 25%-of-ACV cap, so either traditional insurer gap or Progressive’s Loan/Lease Payoff can cover the shortfall. You still pay the deductible.
TRADITIONAL GAP ONLY
The gap exceeds Progressive’s 25%-of-ACV cap. Progressive’s Loan/Lease Payoff would leave a shortfall; traditional insurer gap or a dealer GAP waiver pays the full gap.

Common questions

Why does the tool show "without gap you’d owe" and "gap would pay" as different numbers?

Because they measure different things. "Without gap you’d owe" is loan minus insurance_payout (loan minus (ACV minus deductible)). It includes the deductible, because without gap your insurance check comes in deductible-light. "Gap would pay" is loan minus ACV, the pre-deductible shortfall the gap product actually targets. The difference between the two is exactly your deductible, which stays yours regardless of whether you have a gap endorsement.

Does gap insurance pay my deductible?

Progressive’s own answer page describes the math as "your gap coverage covers the $5,000 gap, minus your deductible," which means the deductible stays with you. Other carriers’ gap products and dealer GAP waivers vary; a few do waive the deductible, most do not. Check your specific policy language or carrier product page before you count on it.

Is gap required if I have a loan or lease?

A loan contract usually does not require gap. A lease agreement often does: many leases bundle a gap waiver into the lease price, and some lessors require you to buy it on your auto policy if the lease waiver is not included. Check the lease agreement first.

Dealer GAP waiver vs insurer gap endorsement, which is cheaper?

Insurer gap (an add-on to your car insurance) is almost always cheaper than a dealer GAP waiver financed into the loan. Dealer GAP waivers are often $500 to $1,000 flat; insurer gap is typically a few dollars a month per vehicle. See our gap coverage guide for the carrier-by-carrier differences.

Why does Progressive’s Loan/Lease Payoff cap at 25% of ACV?

It is a product-design choice disclosed on Progressive’s own gap-insurance page: "the payout for Progressive’s loan/lease payoff coverage is limited to no more than 25% of your vehicle’s value, though the exact limit varies by state." The cap keeps the premium low but means a deeply underwater loan on long-term financing can still leave an uncovered balance.

When should I drop gap?

As soon as the loan balance drops below the car’s current ACV, the gap is $0 and the endorsement stops paying anything. That is typically 2 to 4 years into a standard-term loan with a reasonable down payment, sooner on shorter loans. Rerun this tool at renewal; if the gap is zero, drop the endorsement.

Does this tool send my loan or ACV figures anywhere?

No. All math runs in your browser. The only thing we log for product analytics is the verdict label (no gap / either covers / traditional only). We do not transmit any of the dollar amounts you type.
