State Farm Car Insurance Discounts: Steer Clear, DSS, Multi-Line, Agent Variations
Short answer
State Farm organizes auto discounts across five practical groups: policy structure (Multi-Line and Multi-Vehicle), driving behavior (Drive Safe & Save and Steer Clear), driving history (Accident-Free and Good Driving), vehicle equipment (Passive Restraint, Anti-Theft, Anti-Lock Brakes), and education (Good Student, Student Away at School, Driver Training). The largest structural discounts for most households are Multi-Line bundling (requires State Farm on both sides, not a third-party affiliated carrier), Multi-Vehicle, and Drive Safe & Save, which combines a 10% enrollment discount with up to 30% at renewal for measured safe driving. Steer Clear is a distinct under- 25 training program separate from Drive Safe & Save and should not be confused with it.1
What actually determines whether a State Farm discount applies to you
- State and agent. State Farm uses the exclusive-agent model, and discount availability and percentages are filed state by state. Some discounts require a specific agent process (e.g., submitting Steer Clear training logs). This is why two State Farm policies on paper equivalent households can end up priced differently.
- Multi-Line requires both policies with State Farm. Unlike some competitors who credit a bundle when a third-party carrier underwrites the home side, State Farm’s Multi-Line discount generally applies when both the auto and the property or life policy are State Farm’s own1.
- Drive Safe & Save has state limits. Not available in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island. New York caps the discount at 30%2.
- Steer Clear is for under-25 drivers. It requires completing the training program through the State Farm mobile app and a clean recent record. Different mechanism from Good Student and from Drive Safe & Save3.
- Vehicle-equipment discounts attach to specific coverage lines. Passive Restraint applies to medical-payments and PIP. Anti-Theft applies to comprehensive. These are percentage reductions on specific premium components, not on the full policy.
The State Farm discount list
The table below groups State Farm’s named auto discounts by category and lists the eligibility rule for each. State Farm publishes the full discount catalog on its product page but files specific percentages state by state, so the published-cap column reflects State Farm’s own language where it exists and "varies by state" where no national number is published1.
| Discount | Category | Eligibility | Published cap |

Drive Safe & Save: enrollment plus safe-driving
Drive Safe & Save is the primary telematics lever on a State Farm policy. It has two components:
- Enrollment discount. State Farm advertises a 10% enrollment discount applied at sign-up and the installation of the mobile app paired with the Bluetooth beacon.
- Safe-driving discount. At each renewal, State Farm computes a safe-driving discount of up to 30% based on measured driving behavior (acceleration, braking, cornering, phone distraction, speed over limit, mileage). State Farm does not publicly disclose a surcharge mechanism: the worst case is zero additional discount above the enrollment discount2.
See our full Drive Safe & Save explainer for mechanics, state availability, and fit criteria. Drive Safe & Save is not available in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island. New York caps the discount at 30%. Comparing it against Snapshot, Drivewise, RightTrack, or SmartRide? Our telematics finder walks you through the trade-offs by driving pattern.
Steer Clear: the under-25 program
Steer Clear is State Farm’s under-25 safe-driver program. It is a different mechanism from Drive Safe & Save and from Good Student, and the three can often apply together on a single young driver:
- Eligibility. Driver under 25 with no at-fault accidents or moving violations in the prior three years. Completion of the Steer Clear training program through the State Farm mobile app3.
- Training content. App-based lessons and trip-log entries. The driver completes modules on defensive driving and tracks a set number of trips in the app.
- Discount applied once the agent files it. State Farm’s exclusive-agent model means the applicable discount is typically applied at next renewal after the agent files proof of completion.
Steer Clear is positioned as the under-25 educational program. Drive Safe & Save is the all-ages telematics program. The two can both apply to a young driver who completes Steer Clear and also enrolls in Drive Safe & Save on the family policy.
Where specific discounts have deeper mechanics
- Multi-Line requires State Farm on both sides. The bundle discount applies when both the auto and the home, condo, renters, or life policy are State Farm’s own, not a third-party affiliated carrier. This is a structural difference from some competitors who count affiliated-carrier bundles.
- Accident-Free and Good Driving are different. Accident-Free rewards clean accident history on the State Farm policy over three or more years. Good Driving adds a clean moving-violation history. Both filed state by state.
- Passive Restraint attaches to medical lines. The percentage applies to medical-payments and PIP premium specifically. The absolute dollar impact depends on the state’s medical-coverage pricing and the policy’s elected limits.
- Student Away at School is a mileage reclassification. It applies when a listed student is attending school more than 100 miles from the garaged vehicle and does not take the vehicle. The driver is still on the policy but priced differently because measured exposure is lower.
How State Farm discounts interact with your actual quote
Three things matter in practice:
- Discounts stack multiplicatively. A policy with Multi-Line, Multi-Vehicle, Good Driving, and Drive Safe & Save does not get the sum of those percentages off; the combined effective discount is always smaller because each is applied in sequence.
- Vehicle-equipment discounts attach to specific lines. Passive Restraint reduces medical- payments and PIP, not liability. Anti-Theft reduces comprehensive, not collision. A 25% anti-theft discount on a vehicle with modest comprehensive premium is a small dollar amount.
- Agent and state together decide the applied amount. Because State Farm uses exclusive agents and files per state, two outwardly equivalent households can see different final numbers. If a quote seems off, ask the agent to walk through each applied discount line.
Note that AM Best’s November 14, 2025 downgrade of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates from FSR A++ (Superior) to A+ (Superior) does not change discount availability. Rating action affects financial-strength signaling, not the filed discount catalog. What to actually do with this list
- Audit your State Farm policy against the list. If you moved, bought a home, had a teen reach driving age, bundled renters, or had a student head off to school, you may have earned a discount the agent has not applied.
- Confirm Multi-Line is actually structured as State Farm on both sides. If your home is with a different carrier, the State Farm Multi-Line discount typically does not apply. Rebundling or moving the home may unlock it.
- Decide between Drive Safe & Save and Steer Clear for an under-25 driver. Both can apply, but the under-25 driver has to actually use the Steer Clear training program. See the Drive Safe & Save explainer for how the telematics side works.
- Compare the final State Farm quote against competitors. A heavily-discounted State Farm quote can still sit above a competitor’s base price. See our cheapest car insurance shortlist, our GEICO discounts page, and our Progressive discounts page.

Common follow-up questions
Is Steer Clear the same as Drive Safe & Save?
No. Steer Clear is an under-25 safe-driver training program with app-based lessons and trip logging. Drive Safe & Save is an all-ages telematics program with a Bluetooth beacon. Both can apply to a single under-25 driver who completes the Steer Clear training and also participates in Drive Safe & Save on the family policy23.
Does the State Farm AM Best downgrade affect my discounts?
No. AM Best’s November 14, 2025 action downgraded State Farm Mutual Auto’s FSR from A++ (Superior) to A+ (Superior); it is a financial-strength signal, not a change to the filed discount catalog. Discount availability and eligibility rules are unchanged.
How does Multi-Line work if my home is not with State Farm?
State Farm’s Multi-Line discount generally requires that both the auto policy and the property or life policy be State Farm’s own. Third-party-carrier home policies typically do not trigger the Multi-Line discount on the State Farm auto side1.
Can my rate go up with Drive Safe & Save?
State Farm does not publicly disclose a surcharge mechanism on the Drive Safe & Save product page. The worst case stated is that the safe-driving discount at renewal is small or zero above the 10% enrollment discount, not a rate increase2.
Why do State Farm quotes vary between agents?
State Farm uses the exclusive-agent model and files discount availability and percentages state by state. Two agents in the same state generally quote the same filed rates, but process differences (which discounts are applied, how documentation is submitted) can produce different applied discount sets at bind.
Does State Farm offer a dash cam discount?
State Farm does not publish a standalone dash cam discount in its auto discount catalog. If your vehicle has factory-installed anti-theft equipment (which some dash cams qualify as under certain state filings), the Anti-Theft discount on comprehensive may apply. For verified anti-theft discount handling, ask your State Farm agent to confirm the equipment-group code at bind.
Is there a State Farm defensive driving course discount?
State Farm's Driver Training discount applies to drivers who complete a formal driver-education course, primarily under-21 drivers. For older drivers, several states mandate carrier discounts after an approved defensive-driving or mature-driver course (commonly age 55+); State Farm files these state-specific mature-driver discounts where required. See defensive driving discount for the state-by-state framework. Confirm applicability with your State Farm agent.
Does State Farm have a referral discount?
State Farm has run customer referral programs historically; availability varies by state and by agent and is not a filed rate discount. If your agent runs a referral program, it typically pays out as a gift card or similar; it does not appear as a line item on the policy. For a rate-filed discount, Multi-Line (bundling) and Multi-Vehicle move the premium reliably.
What is the Steer Clear program and how does it work?
Steer Clear is State Farm's safe-driver training program for drivers under 25. The driver completes app-based lessons and logs a required number of supervised driving hours through the State Farm mobile app. Completion earns an auto-insurance discount that applies while the driver remains under 25 and claim-free. Steer Clear is distinct from Drive Safe & Save (an all-ages telematics program) and from Good Student (academic performance). A single under-25 driver can stack all three where available.
Student Away at School: what qualifies?
The Student Away at School discount applies when a listed driver (typically a dependent college student) lives more than a stated radius from home (commonly 100 miles) and does not take the family vehicle to school. The vehicle remains insured on the family policy; the discount reflects reduced in-household usage. Documentation (enrollment confirmation and the away address) is submitted through the agent.
